Monique van Leeuwen

December 4, 1966 - January 26, 2025

On January 26, 2025 Monique van Leeuwen passed away peacefully at the age of 58 in Onoway, AB, after a 12 year fight with a brain tumor.  Monique was always optimistic and inspiring to others. The rowing community has lost a true ambassador for the sport, many people started rowing after chatting with Monique.

Even during her own fight with the brain tumor, she paid regular visits to the Surrey Cancer Centre with her therapy dog “Bleu” helping others in their fight. Monique was a true people connector. She was always bringing people together from all walks of life over a good glass of wine or beautiful food. We can all hope that Monique transitions peacefully to whatever comes next, knowing that she experienced a life well lived and that she was admired, lovedand respected by all who knew her.

Monique will be missed forever by many, especially her husband Stef Schiedon, family and friends.  A Celebration of Monique’s life will take place later in the year. We are all richer for having experienced Monique's love and kindness, she lives on through us.

Thanks to all that cared for Monique over the past 12 years, the neuro-surgery teams in The Royal Columbian Hospital and Alberta University Hospital, BC Cancer and AB Cancer, The Surrey Cancer Centre and the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. Last but not least the excellent care at the Gene Zwozdesky Centre Norwood for their compassion in her last days.
