Conrad was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan to John and Brenda Wilgenbusch. He grew up on a cattle ranch near Halbrite, Saskatchewan where he had a team of Fjord horses with a buggy he liked to drive. Conrad showed cattle with the Cymri 4-H Club for ten years and attended Charolais Youth Conferences during the summers. He graduated from Midale Central School in 2001.

An exceptional athlete, Conrad played Midget AAA hockey for the Yorkton Mallers (19992001) as well as Junior A hockey for the Humboldt Broncos and Flin Flon Bombers.

While playing Junior A hockey, Conrad began post-secondary studies at the University of Saskatchewan. He eventually became a full-time student and graduated from The Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010.

Throughout these years Conrad had his love, Erica Peterson, in his life. Conrad and Erica attended high school together and began dating in 2000. They were married on January 6, 2007. During Conrad’s veterinary medicine years in Saskatoon, the couple bought and sold a house in the city as well as started a yard from scratch in Hanley, Saskatchewan.

Conrad and Erica Wilgenbusch moved to Weatherford, Texas in June of 2010 so Conrad could begin an internship at Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery. This was followed by an equine surgery residency at Iowa State University in July 2011. Conrad became a boardcertified equine surgeon in the spring of 2015.

Conrad and Erica’s first two children, Rhea and Turner, were born in Iowa in September 2012 and August 2014.

The Wilgenbusch family moved back to Canada in February 2015, settling in Sherwood Park, Alberta where their third child Cade was born in November 2016.

Conrad started his own veterinary practice in the spring of 2018, Momentum Equine Veterinary Specialists, and opened a brand-new building in the fall of 2021.

In addition to being a veterinarian, Conrad’s life in Sherwood Park included riding horses, coaching kids’ baseball and hockey, and flying planes. Conrad had a passionate obsession for aviation. He took flying lessons at fifteen years of age, before he could legally drive a car, and eventually obtained his pilot’s license at Cooking Lake Airport in 2017-18.

Above all else, Conrad placed his family. He was a loving husband and dad, committed to his community and firm in his faith for Jesus. Conrad maintained friends from every season of his life. His reach and love extended far and wide touching many people’s hearts.

Conrad faced challenges with his health throughout his adult life. He was diagnosed and treated for Hodgkins Lymphoma in the fall and winter of 2004-2005. In December 2022, Conrad was diagnosed with mesothelioma for which he underwent surgery in Toronto in March 2023. After a turbulent and brave two years, Conrad passed away on January 20, 2025, at Pilgrims Hospice in Edmonton, Alberta.

Conrad is predeceased by his father, John Wilgenbusch; grandparents, Henry and Kathrine Wilgenbusch; grandmother, Marvel McGregor.

Conrad is survived by his wife Erica and children Rhea, Turner, and Cade; mother, Brenda Wilgenbusch; brother Colin and Ashlee (Cash, Carter, Cally) Wilgenbusch; brother Craig and Tricia (Harper, Crew) Wilgenbusch; grandfather, Keith McGregor; in-laws Kim and Sheila Peterson; brother-in-law, Jason and Monica (Reid, Rhett, Ruby) Peterson; sister-inlaw, Kelsey and Jesse (Claire, June) Clauson; sister-in-law, Courtney and Andrew (Sutton) Burnyeat.
