Neil Barker

In Memoriam

February 10, 1956 - January 15, 2024

Neil Barker, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 15, 2024, after a courageous journey with early-onset Alzheimer's.  Neil's life, marked by dedication to family, a deep faith, an illustrious career, and a passion for the outdoors, will be remembered with affection.

Born on February 10, 1956, to parents Ed and Lois Barker, in the small town of Cereal, Alberta, Neil grew up in Grande Prairie, fostering a love for nature that would shape his entire life. He was a brother to Connie (Barry), Dave (Ora), and Brian (Petra).  In 1972, he moved to Edmonton, where he later graduated with a BSc in Forestry from the University of Alberta in 1979. His professional journey began with the Alberta Government in 1979, a commitment that spanned over three decades until his retirement in 2011.

Throughout his career, Neil made significant contributions, showcasing his leadership and passion for forestry. From managing the Pine Ridge Tree Nursery from 1990 to 1996 to concluding his career as the Executive Director of the Oil Sands Branch, Sustainable Resource Development in Edmonton, Neil's impact was felt across various regions, including Whitecourt, Hinton, Edmonton, Smoky Lake, Lac La Biche, and other communities across northern Alberta.

Neil's dedication extended beyond his professional life into his personal realm. On April 27, 1979, he married Brenda Dickau, creating a loving family that included three sons: Steve (Lori), Matt (Cait), and Mike (Jill). Neil cherished his role as a grandfather, adored by seven grandchildren: Von, Cade, Eva, Jack, Ellie, Ruby, and Maggie.

A man of many talents and passions, Neil found solace and joy in the great outdoors. Whether camping with his family, tending to his flower beds, or sailing on his catamaran, he reveled in the beauty of nature. Neil's love for adventure extended to renovations, where his "jack-of-all-trades" spirit thrived. From building additions to retrofitting homes, his fearlessness knew no bounds.

In 2011, Neil retired from the government, transitioning to consulting. However, health challenges arose, leading to a diagnosis that explained his struggles – a rare form of Alzheimer's. Despite the challenges, Neil faced this adversity with resilience and grace. In November 2021, he entered care, surrounded by the love and support of his family.

Neil’s Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life.  A devoted servant with a compassionate heart, he found joy and purpose in serving in various capacities within the church community.  Neil’s commitment extended to serving as an elder in multiple churches, where his leadership and genuine care touched the lives of many.

Neil’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. His unwavering spirit, love for family, and dedication to his faith are eternally imprinted in the memories of his friends and loved ones. As we say goodbye to a remarkable man, may we celebrate the life of Neil Barker, a true adventurer whose legacy will endure through the stories and memories he leaves behind.
